Development Playground Created to Extend Asterisk

SARASOTA, FLA – October 25, 2006 – Star2Star Communications, maker of the world’s most reliable business grade Internet phone solution, announces it is sponsoring an open source application platform in order to help extend Asterisk, an advanced communications platform written as a software application and available for free.

To formally launch the Development Playground Star2Star created StarBox-X, an exclusive experimental version of StarBox (an embedded Asterisk PBX). Star2Star is offering the first 50 units for $50 each to Astricon attendees only. Focused on open source empowering VoIP (Voice over Internet Protocol), Astricon is the official Asterisk user and developer's conference. The 3rd annual Astricon Conference is being held in Dallas, Texas from October 24 through October 27 at the Dallas Westin Park Central hotel.

In addition to the StarBox-X developers also receive a free SIP account for development, access to a hosted MySQL database at Star2Star’s data center for creating applications and access to Star2Star’s provisioning process for quick and easy setup. Plus, a softphone so developers can make and receive calls out of the box. The StarBox-X PBX can handle up to 30 simultaneous calls and 100 extensions.

Star2Star also provides tools, APIs, support and a web-based community for sharing and spreading great ideas about Asterisk-based applications. To get into the spirit of fun and innovation Astricon attendees can vote for their favorite playground application already built and displayed at the Star2Star booth (#117). All favorite application voting entry forms are automatically entered into a daily drawing for a color laser printer giveaway.

Ultimately, developers can make use of this complete kit by creating next-generation Asterisk-based applications that extend the marketplace and add value to the Asterisk Platform. Kristian Kielhofner, creator of AstLinux and vice president of systems engineering at Star2Star states, "The Asterisk Development Playground will facilitate the creation of a wide variety of Asterisk add-on applications. We are very interested in listening to community feedback. I'm really looking forward to seeing what they come up with and I am particularly excited about the SIP location service, which allows any Starbox-X to locate other Starbox-Xs effortlessly.”
