Who Are We and Why Are We Doing This?

Star2Star Communications built the first true end-to-end integrated data-voice telephone solution. It combines an on-premise embedded systems PBX with a virtualized PBX at a NOC, tuned and customized SIP service along with robust automated monitoring and management capabilities. We will be formally launching our solution soon. But, that's not why this website exists.

Star2Star Communications is also a group of true believers in open source generally and committed enthusiasts for Asterisk in particular. To us, the future lies with complete integrated solutions that merge the best of traditional telephony with the desktop and net and we want to help enable this future.

When we started with Asterisk, we discovered what a pain it could be to get everything configured just to do the telephony equivalent of "Hello, World". As we went further with Asterisk we discovered that some functionality we wanted wasn't included in Asterisk (and shouldn't be).

As we built our commercial system, we realized that the side-effect of our design was a simple solution to the two problems above. Our architecture (in part) calls for a reliable, robust on-premise PBX that's easily configurable. Our architecture also calls for a simple way to add new features (and entire applications) at the "edge".

We want to see Asterisk extended in all sorts of interesting and useful ways. It's good for all Asterisk users and it's good for the community of Asterisk developers and enthusiasts (like us). So, in the spirit of showing, not telling, we are offering to all Astricon attendees a cost-subsidized ($50 complete) development version of the Star2Star "StarBox" to the hardcore Asterisk community (which is why we are here). We call this the "StarBox-X".

The Starbox-X is the same hardware Star2Star uses in its "Starbox 2100" on-premise PBX (except in a cheaper box!). Based on AstLinux, the Starbox-X is a complete implementation of Asterisk. We give you everything needed to burn down and rebuild Asterisk (with various mod inclusions) with more or less a few key presses. All sources and configurations are fully exposed. We also give you a free (limited) SIP account to test calling. It's a complete Asterisk experimentor's kit.

Starbox-X runs in one of two modes:

New bounty: FOP Server in C

Hello everyone, I would like to announce a new bounty. The Flash Operator Panel (http://www.asternic.org ) is a very popular add-on for Asterisk systems. FOP includes a daemon that connects to the Asterisk manager interface and provides updates to the flash interface used by the client.

The current FOP server is called op_server.pl and can be found in the FOP tarball. It is currently written in Perl. Perl is not very friendly for embedded systems. We are currently looking for somone to rewrite this daemon in C. The requirements are:
